Ruth Tomlinson

The latest of my chosen artists or designers, is award winning jeweller, Ruth Tomlinson. She launched her first collections ‘Flora’ and ‘Sketch’ in 2001. She has since developed four jewellery collections including critically acclaimed ‘Encrustations’ and ‘Hoard’ following her MA at London’s Royal College of Art in 2005. With her london based studio at Cockpit Arts in Holborn, Ruth's work has a lovely balance between intricate, delicate detail and a raw natural quality of the material. Below are some examples of her rings that also happen to be the rings that Mima and I will be wearing next year!

A Butchers Block for Mum

Buying a present can often be tricky especially for a Mum who has everything!! So why change the tried and tested method of making her something. I am sure she still has the mug tree I made her when I was at 13!
Below is how I did it.

Chop blocks
Assemble the blocks. A few more I think
Glue them all together. Just a few clamps needed here!
Sand it down
And photograph it looking lovely!
No she didn't get the knife!

Janey Sharratt

The new exhibition of my dear friend Janey Sharratt, opened this week at Highgate Contemporary Art. With a background in Interior Design and currently teaching at Chelsea College of Art and Design, Janey's Portaits, Landscapes and Still Life paintings are clearly influenced by the subject of spatial relationships.
I have been fortunate to have helped her over the past few years by making the frames that her beautiful work occupy. Follow the links below for more about Janey and the exhibition.

Tate Modern

Went to Tate Modern the other day with Bo and Mima. Really enjoyed the current exhibition in the Turbine Hall, which is the latest in the Unilever Series by celebrated filmmaker, Tacita Dean. Apart from enjoying the film we had lots of fun with our shadows!

Love that we can still see 'Shibboleth' the now filled in crack in the Turbine halls floor, created by artist Doris Salcedo, in 2007

Valentines Gift

So this is what I made for Valentines Day. Well not so much made, more extracted. I have regularly photographed what I call 'Love Knots' which I often see in lengths of softwood. I thought I would see if I could remove it and the result is below.

The Heart sits in its own natural cup from which it separates from at the point it was extracted from the wood.

A gift

Love this that I received the other day from Sarah, a student at Chelsea College who has cast these lovely plaster 'plug in socket' as part of a collection. This went straight up on the wall.

The cast has amazing detail with the back wood chip wall paper with the whole thing seemingly ripped out of the wall.

A Box for the Hall

Thought it was about time I made a little storage box for the hall. A perfect place to keep some special shoes in! I will make one for my shoes some day!!

At the end of the hall was a perfect place for a storage unit. Made from Walnut and Black MDF it is a perfect place to keep some special shoes out of harms way.
